I was Looking for an Economical solution for a 19″ touch screen Monitor, I Came across some surplus touch screen monitors by Planar System they have the 5 wire restive interface for the touch panel the same as the $149-$199 17″ Mono Price 15482 That Tormach Sells For $260.00 + About $30.00 Shipping So Nearly $300.00 for a 17″ Display is Insane in a time where LCD monitors and touch panels are Dirt Cheap.
In My Search I found many places selling these planar displays. I even came across pallet loads of them at public surplus and gsa auctions but wh0 needs pallet load of them.
There seem to be 2 Major Ebay Sellers Right Now… Who seem to be players For these Surplus Touch Screens. Both are at $99.00 shipped both with best offer! I said Why Not? Lets Gamble Again. The price seems to good little to good to be true.

The visual appearance is they are clean and have just minor cosmetic blemishes as stated in the ebay auction, Again both of the cases were separating but it was just a quick press and was nice and tight they probually could have packaged them better they are heavy about 15lbs ea with the stands.
Back Panel.. The Dsub Screws On Both Displays Were Loose and had to be Tightened!
The Moment of Truth… Apply Some Power and a Signal!
Hello Stafford / Houston We have Issues… The Displays Are Very Washed Out… Maybe Weak CCFL’s or Weak Power Supply’s it took a Min or Two for them to Warm Up to even start displaying an image!!!
Lights Off?? Not So Bad… This Is telling me these displays both have very weak CCFL’s
On the Other Hand the VESA Mount Fits Tormach Mount No Modification. But Display On Both Monitors is Very Washed Our in the Standard Shop Light. Not Usable….
Mounted Straight Looking On You Cannot See The Blue Box.
Adjusting the Angle Helps a Bit But No Way Is it Useful At This Angle Unless you 3′ Tall.

Light On Vs. Lights Off.. Even With the Lights off the Color/Contrast is still not There Fully.
These Surplus Ebay Displays the CCFL Backlights have clearly been used up! The only good thing is the internal speakers do not sound that bad and the touch screen was accepted and worked with path pilot 2.0 and the internal calibration tool ADMIN TOUCHSCREEN worked.
The brightness & contrast controls on the display are almost non responsive.
From My Research these displays use the LG LM190E08 display panel witch should be bright and clear.
In No way have they been tested and refurbished with such washed out displays.. I would say these displays are for sure not Grade “A” but a Grade “C-” maybe “D” On a Scale With “F” Being Total Junk. Unless you like Machining or Working in the dark or Very Low Light.
Both Displays are Very Slow to Start & Washed Out Cannot Be Used In Lighted Area.
Final Thoughts Are To Avoid This Display. I usually do 2 items when reviewing surplus just in-case 1 has issues but 2 having issues = just down right unacceptable!!!
If You try This Display Maybe you will have Better luck may be worth the gamble to you.
These displays will be going to the Recycler.
I may do a Tear Down! Maybe! Not Sure!
